Course Tutor - Prof Riaan Mulder BChD, MSc, PhD
Prof. Riaan Mulder qualified as a dentist in 2007, obtaining his BChD from the University of the Western Cape (UWC). He holds a Master’s degree in Restorative Dentistry and a PhD in Paediatric Dentistry, in which he focussed on the development and improvement of various glass ionomers to increase the activity of these biomaterials for restorative purposes on tooth structure.
He is one of two permanent staff members in the UWC dental faculty, rated for his research by the National Research Foundation (NRF) of South Africa. He obtained his Associate Professor title in 2022 and is the youngest in the UWC dental faculty to achieve this.
Prof. Mulder’s interests span the treatment of paediatric, special-need, and geriatric patients. He takes a keen interest in research with an extensive portfolio of national and international articles.
Prof. Mulder’s current research focusses on various dental devices to improve patient care by reducing aerosol generation in the dental surgery, simplifying dental procedures, and ensuring repeatability of the performed procedure. He regularly lectures to national and international dental fraternities.
